Municipal Money is a project by the South African National Treasury that allows people to examine how local government is managing public money.
Municipal Money is an easy-to-use website designed to shed light on how local governments are spending money. With an interactive map and search tool, users are empowered to dig, find statistics on local expenditure, and take action. Developed in collaboration with OpenUp and the South African National Treasury, the site is adaptable to mobile phones, and the design is focused on usability.
My goal was to create a clean and friendly user interface to challenge the idea that exploring government budget data has to be complicated or intimidating. I designed a number of mockups for the site before implementing the final design on top of Bootstrap, making plentiful use of SCSS and jQuery. The site draws inspiration from data portals around the world to ensure it subscribes to best practice for accessible design.
